Special Districts

Church Avenue- Riverside Drive Area:
Since the urban renewal days of the 1960s, there have been a variety of street trees have been planted. Many of these are attractive, but there are inconsistencies in the distribution of trees and a lack of variety of native trees. An overall tree-planting plan and program are recommended.

Oakwood:
This neighborhood is composed of blocks that have sidewalks and often have wide planting strips. Many of the trees in the area were topped and are dying or have been lost. An overall tree-planting program that includes provisions for traffic calming, such as bulb outs to protect parked cars, especially along such truck-oriented streets as Morelia Avenue, is recommended.

Fort Sanders:
Already recognized as a neighborhood conservation district, tree planting in this area should be undertaken in accord with the neighborhood plan and design guidelines.

Significant Opportunities

Several proposals are depicted on the plan map, including street trees in Lonsdale, Park City, Old North and Sutherland Avenue. Additional trees should be added along Western Avenue, including the green in front of Mechanicsville Commons. There are additional opportunities to create landscaped medians along Neyland Drive, especially in KUB’s wastewater treatment area.
