There are two distinct areas: the neighborhood between Blount Avenue and Chapman Highway, and the industrial area west of Mary Vestal Park. In view of the Long Range Transportation Plan, which calls for four-lane cross section between Woodson Drive and Chapman Highway, the following should be considered.

Recommendations:

  • From a tree conservation and planting perspective, the four-lane cross section should be reevaluated as follows: (a) maintaining the two-lane segment including the trees and houses between Blount Avenue and Chapman Highway; (b) use the proposed three-lane Moody Avenue extension as the upgraded connection to Chapman Highway; and (c) consider a three-lane design along Maryville Pike, westward to Woodson Drive that would have landscaped medians and turn lanes.
  • Because of the long range road widening, locations for trees should be selected in the industrial area, which will not be lost because of the highway project.
  • Screen recycling and other industrial yards with such trees as white pine and magnolia.
