Western
Plaza to Northshore Drive
Land improvements were proposed in the Bearden Village Opportunities
Plan, including recommendations for street trees and sidewalk widening
along Kingston Pike. The locations of sidewalks, relative to travel
lanes, are very inconsistent.
Recommendations:
- Pursue
the Bearden Village concepts.
- Plant
additional trees in parking areas and yards and under utility lines.
- Conserve
the pines in the vicinity leading to the cemetery.

Bearden
Hill (Northshore Drive to Papermill Road)
Most
of the trees have been removed and few have been planted. This is one
of the widest sections of Kingston Pike, composed of four lanes and
turning lanes.
Recommendations:
- Examine
the potential to create medians in the long-term.
- Continue
to develop a sidewalk system similar to those in front of the Knollwood
development.
- Work
with adjacent property owners to plant yard trees.
- Plant
trees near Papermill Road where the drainage improvements have been
made.

Papermill
Road to Bridgewater Road
With
the exception of a few places like the oaks around Markman’s Jewelry
and the maples at West Town, this area is devoid of substantial shade
trees.
Recommendation:
- Spaces
should be created for tree planting, including spaces in parking lots,
near property entrances, around buildings and as a backdrop behind
properties. Given the complexities, a tree planting plan should be
created in conjunction with area property owners.

Bridgewater
Road to Lovell Road
Kingston
Pike turns away from I-40 in this section. The landscape of residential
and office development, particularly on the south side of Kingston Pike,
is substantial and should be conserved. The Franklin Square development
is a model of tree conservation and planting.
Recommendation:
- Borrowing
from the Franklin Square concepts, continue an overall tree planting
and conservation program.
