Such
stretches of the highway as Mooreland Heights and Lake Forest are heavily
wooded and should be conserved. Otherwise, there are few trees along
this old strip commercial corridor. While short-term planting strategies
include tree planting along the edge of the right-of-way, recreating
space for tree planting in asphalt-laden areas is a significant need.
Recommendations:
There are several long-term strategies that should be pursued.
- With
the completion of the James White Parkway extension, travel behavior
is likely to change. For instance, Sevier Countians are likely to
bypass the commercial areas. The recently completed South City Sector
Plan recognized that possibility and that streetscape changes should
be considered. Street trees could be part of the formula in redevelopment
proposals that include safer pedestrian space and mixed land use.
One alternative that should be explored is a boulevard design, particularly
from Woodlawn Pike to the Henley Street Bridge.
- The
other long-term changes should include tree planting in parking lots,
particularly as redevelopment occurs.
