Long-Range Tree Planting and Conservation Strategies
These approaches generally will require a more significant investment, or involve the improvement of a section of road where tree-planting opportunities can be foreseen.

Creating medians and planting strips
Alternatives for road improvements will be examined from time to time as roads are extended or widened. There will be opportunities to create landscaped medians and planting areas with road improvements.

Widening sidewalks and planting trees or planting trees within existing sidewalks
As changes are made to some of Knoxville’s most urban settings, for example, downtown and Cumberland Avenue, there are opportunities to widen sidewalks and create planting wells within them to provide a more pleasant environment for pedestrians. Pervious paving should be considered in creating these spaces.

Creating planting strips and constructing sidewalks that are well separated from travel lanes
People desire the comfort and safety of being separated from automobile traffic. In designing new roads or improving old corridors, the separation of sidewalks with intermediate tree plantings should be sought.

Redesigning parking lots and planting trees with redevelopment
For many years there were no tree planting requirements, resulting in a barren landscape in a number of commercial areas. With property redevelopment, there are opportunities for streetscape enhancement through tree plantings, including parking areas.
