Background Report

Public Involvement
Involving the public in the planning process is central to the successful development and implementation of a sector plan. Various meetings were held to gather input. The first rounds of public meetings were held in different locations within the sector during the winter of 2003. These meetings helped to gather information on key issues in the many neighborhoods throughout the sector. Following the initial meetings, MPC planners held two workshops at the Karns Community Center. During the community planning workshops, a number of major issues and opportunities were identified. These issues became a foundation in developing the plan:

greenway

Improved greenway systems are important to sector residents.

  • Conservation of open space through the use of parks and greenways
  • Protection of ridges and waterways and provision of trails along these natural areas
  • Development of a concept for a village center in the Hardin Valley/Steele Road area
  • Conservation subdivisions for residential development between Ball Camp Pike and Ball Road
  • Need for design guidelines in the commercial area of Karns
  • Implementation of mixed-use development including office, retail and housing within the Technology Corridor
  • Use of boulevards with a green median on new road projects
  • Inclusion of sidewalks and bikelanes to new and improved road plans
