Background Report

Population and Growth Trends
The Northwest County Sector remains the most populated of all the sectors, with a 2000 Census count of 62,864. Population growth continues to be strong, with a 27% increase between 1990-2000, accounting for 29% of the population growth of the entire county during this period. It was the third fastest growing sector during the last decade, trailing only the Southwest and North Knox County sectors.

The fastest growing population groups are adults over the age of 45 and children under the age of 14. The median age in 2000 (35.6) was slightly less than that of the entire county (36.0 years). The growth of the white population slowed somewhat as minority populations gained a greater percentage of the population in 2000.

In terms of household makeup, the number of single parent families with children under the age of eighteen increased 26.3% between 1990 and 2000. The average household size in the sector has continued to decrease from 2.9 in 1980 to 2.44 in 2000.

The increase in the number of dwelling units has corresponded with population growth. In the last decade, 24.6% of the county’s new dwelling units were located in this sector. Following trends throughout the county, single family attached units experienced the greatest increase, 230.1%, although single family detached units continue to comprise the majority of dwelling units, 64.4% of all units.
