Renovation Winner:
Young-Williams Animal Village
The Animal Village is located on Bearden Hill in what was once Copeland’s Restaurant. The renovation brings pet-serving facilities close to the center of our population where Knoxvillians can adopt dogs and cats and have their pets spayed or neutered.
The center was created as a joint venture with Pet Safe, who operates the doggy day care and the retail sales of Invisible Fence, a system to keep pets in their own yards.
Johnson Architecture is commended for the re-design. Natural lighting is provided through skylights and large storefront windows, establishing an airy, welcoming setting.
Like the Young-Williams Animal Shelter on Sutherland Avenue, this building uses a natural stone base, heavy timber beams, and a seam metal roof. And like the larger shelter, Craftsman-style features were used. The covered outdoor play spaces protect the animals from the elements, while allowing visitors to see and enjoy the pets before entering the facility.
