New Development Winner:
John J. Duncan, Jr. Knoxville Station Transit Center
The Center is the new home for Knoxville Area Transit, replacing scattered downtown stops. The planning and design team were faced with significant constraints in locating and developing the facility.
Primary among the constraints was the need for a downtown site capable of safely accommodating numerous buses and trolleys and hundreds of passengers each day. The team took an innovative approach by using the public air rights over James White Parkway. With the site selection, other potential downtown locations were preserved for future private investment.
Knoxville Station is truly multi-modal. Accommodations include bicycle storage, a trolley staging area, a place for para-transit vehicles for the disabled, and a drop off for taxis, automobiles, and other bus services. Parking at Coliseum Garages allows commuters to park nearby and use transit to their workplaces.

Finally, the center is a masterpiece in sustainability, featuring
a geothermal cooling and heating system, solar panels and solar efficient windows, an urban garden, and green roofs.
