Neighborhood/Civic Achievement Winner:
Go to 2033: Urban Planning Student Manual
The manual is based on the Knoxville-Knox County General Plan, and nicknamed, Go to 2033, a year representing the long range vision for the community. The largest measure of credit for the manual goes to Suzanne Wedekind, an art teacher from West Valley Middle School, who developed its curricula.
The document includes an overview of planning history, local plans, and various design exercises for students. Gene Burr, a Knoxville-based planner and architect, had the idea and Suzanne took it to heart in producing this teaching tool for art and social studies students.
Civic Organization: East Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
Manual Designer: Suzanne Wedekind, West Valley Middle School

Students successfully used the manual’s planning and design principles this past school year to develop their own plans for Bearden and Cumberland Avenue.
MPC believes that Go to 2033 will inspire our young citizens to more fully participate in the decisions that result in creating fine communities.
