The project revolves around the preservation of three civil war forts, diverse habitats, and the initial part of a trail system that connects the emerald pearls of its open spaces. In all, 1,000 acres were set aside in perpetuity for our benefits and those of generations to follow.

While the preservation of such historic resources as Fort Higley have been realized, the future holds another bright promise…a trail system overlooking the river and turning in land to connect ridgelines, Ijams Nature Center and public wildlife resources.

The corridor’s natural areas have a feel of having the Smokies in Knoxville’s background. A rich variety flora, fauna and geologic features can be found along its paths. |

Created only three years ago, Legacy Parks has been instrumental in establishing park land in several Knox County communities. However, the foundation quickly realized a big dream in establishing this urban wilderness system. To be sure, there are many individuals and corporations hundreds that deserve credit as hundreds of donations were provided in making this dream a reality. |
