In 2008, the Planning Commission began an award program for environmental achievement, recognizing projects that, among a host of factors, reduce energy consumption and automobile reliance and foster environmental stewardship. In 2009, the Commission awarded two projects Environmental Sustainability awards. The first of these recognizes the Bearden Greenway.

This Greenway is a 2-mile bicycle and pedestrian path that runs along Sutherland Avenue, providing recreational opportunities linked to the Third Creek Greenway.

But the Bearden Greenway is much more. With its connections to Bearden Elementary School, West High School and the University of Tennessee, this trail provides transportation options for students—including walking and bicycling. Bike racks at the schools attest to the trail’s popularity.

People in adjoining neighborhoods can easily reach the trail. A few years ago, one would have to walk along a road shoulder or ditch to get to their destination. Now, people can walk safely to area businesses and transit connections.

The Commission was impressed by a University study that found a measurable increase in the perception of walkability in the Bearden area. This before and after study is rare and points to success of the greenway system.

The Bearden Council of Neighborhoods, led by Terry Faulkner, was very involved with the design of the greenway and its landscaping. They provided historical markers and planted trees and shrubs to beautify the corridor.
