Neighborhood/Civic Achievement Winner:
Lonsdale United for Change: Infill Housing Program

The citizen-based organization, Lonsdale United for Change, has been the major interest in fostering the infill housing program. They were alarmed that double-wides were beginning to be placed on vacant lots. While not against manufactured housing, the neighbors felt that better design could occur. In other words, that new homes could complement Lonsdale’s bungalows and Victorian cottages.

The neighborhood collaborated with MPC and the City’s Community Development and the East Tennessee Design Center staff in adopting Infill Housing Guidelines. They were the pioneers for this relatively new zoning overlay. Two more infill housing districts have resulted from their success. Neighbors often tour Lonsdale to make sure that developers are following the guidelines. Lonsdale's success has been remarkable. Over 20 new homes have been created on vacant lots in the past year.
