The Knoxville News Sentinel Building is located on a hilltop between I-40 and Western Avenue, where it serves as the anchor for the new Center City Business Neighborhood. The building includes both office and industrial uses with a 78,000-square-foot editorial headquarters and a 100,000-square-foot production facility.

Placing the new facility in this previously blighted area has provided a new standard for future developments in the Center City Business Neighborhood. Vehicular flow and utility needs for this site, as well as those surrounding it, were designed in a manner to allow easy access and accommodation for future developments.

The site is highly visible from the interstate and serves as a significant and positive first impression of downtown Knoxville when arriving from the west. Composing the various building masses into a single coherent design was successfully executed by the design team.

Each area uses a darker colored panel at grade level to visually anchor the building and a lighter colored panel to reduce the large scale. Other components include horizontally banded curtainwall glazing, split faced concrete masonry units, and two types of insulated metal panels. The metal panels on the office portion of the building are smooth faced while the panels on the production component feature vertically ribbed panels to break up the scale of the large surfaces.

Inside the lobby, the work of regional artists is on display.

Parking for the clients and employees is sited to allow easy access to the facility.

The side yard of the building is landscaped. Vehicular traffic required to support the production area is located at the rear of the building, allowing convenient access for material delivery and shipping.

The design of the building and site provides for the needs of employees, as evidenced by this outdoor break area.

This view shows a portion of the seven story press, located in the tallest part of the building.

A wide expanse of space is required to accommodate the newspaper assembly and loading area.
