Renovation Category Winner 2004 Jacobs Building
Chilhowee Park 's Jacob Building recently underwent renovation to bring the building up to code. These improvements included installing air conditioning, upgrading interior fittings and finishes, and completely recladding and refinishing the exterior. Further improvements to light fixtures, fittings and other amenities are planned for the future. The Jacob Building renovation is worthy of consideration for having improved the building's safety, comfort and functionality.
The city requested brick cladding, both to improve the quality level of the exterior finish and to achieve more of a visual connection to the recently built park gateway structures. The history of the Jacob Building as well as the architecture of its style and period were examined in order to achieve as appropriate and consistent a result as possible. Many features, including the towers and their banding details, entry canopies, and bullnosed entries, have distinct Art-Modern influences and were carefully preserved.
The city required exclusion of natural light from the interior in order to serve exhibitors. Several alternatives were investigated for renovation of the extensive window openings, ranging from restoring the existing steel sash in conjunction with opaque infill panels. Among a number of alternative glazing bar patterns developed for the panel system, the chosen design emphasizes the horizontal proportions of the window bands while restating the vertical mullion spacing of the original glazing. On the exterior, a dark color was chosen for these panels, in order to preserve the sense of these bands as the window openings they once were. The specific dark green color was considered the best choice among the stand colors available for harmonizing well with the other exterior finish colors. |
