This year's winner, South Trader’s Landing, stands as a metamorphosis of a decrepit tire warehouse into an attractive shopping center. The project also involved an environmental improvement, removing hundreds of old tires and batteries from the site. The architects, Hutchins and Associates, used green, corrugated metal arches to highlight the entrances to the shops, providing a tasteful way to break up the long façade. A wine shop and Chops Grill are the major tenants. The graphics are nicely stated. With its orientation at an angle to Chapman Highway, its wall signs provide clear information about the tenants without relying on large pole signs. This approach reduces the visual clutter along this section of the highway and the two landscaped tiers of parking nicely break up the hardscape. In the words of the nominator, "the new look and entry features change what was once an eyesore on the scenic route to the Smokies into an attractive addition." The commission agrees with that sentiment.
