Old North Knoxville, Inc.

Also winning in the Neighborhood/Civic Achievement category is Old North Knoxville Inc. This group was incorporated in 1978 as a public benefit organization, working to combat community deterioration and secure decent, safe, sanitary housing and renewed community facilities. To meet their goals, the organization has ongoing committees involved in beautification, historic preservation, "neighbors helping neighbors," and neighborhood watch. Dozens of houses have been restored and the area is now a historic district. Banners and street trees highlight the beautification program, and its annual Christmas open house tour draws over 1,400 visitors. Old North also created a newsletter, which reaches hundreds of families in the area.
