Caswell Park

The commission will recognize the City of Knoxville this evening for its redevelopment of Caswell Park. The program for this project was put together by a task force of neighborhood representatives and sports and recreation interests. The program included a new softball complex, which was the major component of phase one, walking trails, expansion of the O'Connor Senior Citizen Center and a new Boys and Girls Club, all of which are under construction at this time. The design and engineering firm, Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon, prepared the phase one plans. Softball players from across the southeastern region comment that the complex is the best that they’ve ever seen. The Victorian-style pavilion, named in honor of Sam Anderson (educator, Park Director and school board member), was designed to mimic the architecture of the surrounding neighborhood. One of the most impressive aspects of the design is the number of places to sit and relax, including rocking chairs and planters as well as the bleachers. The amount and variety of landscaping was found to be most impressive. This project sets a high standard for park development and should promote long-term improvements for the community.
