The 2002 winner in the Commercial/Industrial category is Mercedes Place. This small shopping center, with gabled roofline and porticos, was designed by the Lewis Group and built on the site of the former Knoxville Motor Company. The center has substantially improved the aesthetics of this section of Kingston Pike. Two of the tenants, Panera Bread Company and Marble Slab Creamery, have provided outdoor cafes, adding to center's appeal. Its landscaping is also appealing. Trees have been generously planted and textured walkways lead patrons toward the stores. The commission found Mercedes Place to be the type of quality development that can help realize a Bearden Village, which is a goal of area residents and businesses.
