Village
of Concord
Historic District

|
The Village of Concord Historic District is also a recipient of a Neighborhood/Civic Achievement Award. This represents the first large area in Knox County to be protected by a historic zoning overlay. It took many years to create the district. The story began in 1987, when the Village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At that time, Frances and Mac Abel prepared a booklet about Concord's history and architecture. Others took interest, including Bill Threlkeld, JeAnn Fergusen, and Cran and Carol Montgomery. They worked with their neighbors to overcome concerns about historic zoning and began to restore some of the most significant houses. The creation of this district has led to a greater appreciation of Concord's heritage, a stronger neighborhood and considerable investment in its historic resources. |
