The Heuristic Workshop

The winner is the Heuristic Workshop. Heuristic means helping to discover or learn. The owners of this building, Eric Ohlgren and Carl Keaney, have helped Knoxville tremendously, teaching us that an Old City train shed can have new life and discovering that meaningful jobs can be sustained in an area begging for renewal. After purchasing this cinder block addition to an 1850 train shed, they worked with architect Leon Lawson to transform the space into an attractive, efficient woodworking shop. Located next to the Gay Street Viaduct, the modern brick entrance and offices provide added security to a long-neglected parcel. In similar fashion, the side of the building has been transformed with a new warehouse entrance. With their 15 master carpenters, the owners have injected life and an employment base to the Old City. The cabinetry they produce is found in stores, universities and hospitals throughout the region. The Commission is pleased to see such a transformation in this district.
