Habitat for Humanity, Inc. Our winner is Knoxville's
Habitat for Humanity for its Easton Meadow Subdivision. The subdivision
was created through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and Knox County
government, which purchased the land and enabled the development to
go forward. Unlike other Habitat projects that are oriented to infill
development, this project was envisioned to create an entire new neighborhood. |

Located off Rutledge Pike, the bungalow and ranch-style houses have access to common areas and a community garden. Martella and Associates and Ross Fowler provided innovative designs for a few senior citizen homes. Volunteer senior citizens worked along side each other in creating those new houses. In September 2000, over two dozen houses were created through what Habitat called "Blitz Build." Partnerships were formed with community groups to work with future residents to build the housing. Within a matter of weeks, the new neighborhood was well on its way to being formed. |
